NZ Native Sanctuary Garden, Mangawhai Heads

Site Transformation

Grasses such as Lomandra ‘Lime Tuff’, Miscanthus sinensis, and oioi form a soft, structural foundation. These are interwoven with perennial planting including Gaura, Manuka, Sedum 'Autumn Joy' and Hydrangea ‘Limelight’, providing colour, texture, and year-round floral interest.

The result is a low-maintenance Mangawhai sanctuary that thrives in coastal conditions and inspires planting choices for future gardens.

The Plant Palette

This coastal sanctuary is an evolving garden between bush and sea. This is the garden designer’s own space — a place to experiment with plants that offer both beauty and resilience. Designed to be easy care and drought tolerant, the garden blends native planting with elements of a cottage garden, creating a relaxed, natural feel.
